How Does Botox Work?

Botox injections use a purified version of the same toxin that causes botulism. These bacteria toxins are not harmful when used correctly, and they can be very effective for blocking nerve signals to muscles, preventing them from contracting. Botox injections are used to treat neck spasms, sweating, overactive bladder, and migraine, but most often, they are used for cosmetic purposes. Botox can be used to smooth wrinkles on the face, and are particularly effective for forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines. How Is a Botox Procedure Done?

The health care provider injects tiny amounts of Botox into specific muscles, using a fine needle. The number of shots varies depending on the size of the treatment area, and sometimes ultrasound is used to guide the needle. The full results of Botox are not generally visible until three to seven days after treatment.

How Long Does a Botox Injection Last?

The effects of a Botox injection will usually last three to four months, and as the muscles regain their function, the lines and wrinkles will begin to reappear. In order to maintain the effect, the procedure will need to be repeated every few months. However, as time goes on and more treatments are given, the look of wrinkles and lines will be less severe, because the muscles are being conditioned to relax.

What Are the Side Effects of Botox?

When performed by a licensed and skilled health care provider, Botox injections are typically safe. If given incorrectly, though, these injections can result in unwanted results. Temporary pain, swelling or bruising at the injection site is the most common side effect, though other side effects can include headache, flu-like symptoms, drooping eyelids or crooked eyebrows, drooling or a crooked smile, watery eyes or dry eye, and infection at the injection site. More concerning symptoms, which require an immediate call to your doctor, include muscle weakness, vision problems, breathing difficulties, problems with talking or swallowing, allergic reactions, or loss of bladder control.

Who Should Not Receive Botox?

It is important to talk to your dermatologist about whether Botox is a good fit for the problem you would like to correct. While Botox is safe in most instances, there are people who should not receive this kind of treatment, including those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a neurological disease. Botox is also not suitable for those under age 18. Remember, Botox is a prescription medication that should only be used by a licensed, skilled health care provider.
